Japan: Mitsubishi and NEDO in smart grid project

Monday, December 06, 2010, AutomotiveWorld.com

Mitsubishi Motors, Mitsubishi Corporation and Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (MELCO) have agreed to collaborate on a smart grid system research project by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO). The three Mitsubishi partners have been working on smart grid research since March this year. They applied to NEDO to participate in the project and were accepted on 24 August. Under a subsidy contract, NEDO will contribute two-thirds of total project costs.

The Tokyo Institute of Technology is acting as advisor to the project, which aims to develop smart grid systems that employ electric vehicles and the lithium-ion batteries used to power them.

The project will see photovoltaic systems, electric vehicles, and lithium-ion batteries recycled from electric vehicles installed at Mitsubishi Motors’ electric vehicle factory in Okazaki (Nagoya Plant). The electric vehicles used by the factory workers to commute to and from work will also be involved in the project. The batteries will be recharged using the photovoltaic and grid systems, and a Factory Energy Management System (FEMS) will be developed to optimize energy use and conserve energy at the factory.

The project will also focus on developing an Electric Vehicle Integration System (EIS), which will control charge-discharge amounts and rates to minimise burden on the vehicles, as well as employ the FEMS to use the vehicles as batteries for supplementary energy supply.
