Fusion Related Gyrotrons used to Drive Sub-Terrahertz —100GHz non-lethal weapons

 As part of my research into Fusion Reactors, and Far-Infra Red Hi-energy Experiments ran into this PR from a US Military Contractor (now there's a surprise) detailing modified Technology from the Radar and Fusion Reactor Experimental arena:

Non-lethal Weapons:

"CPI's millimeter-wave gyrotrons are used by the military's Active Denial System, which is being developed as an Advanced Concept Technology Demonstration by the Department of Defense's Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Directorate. Compared to other non-lethal weapons, this system can operate at a much longer range and poses an extremely small risk of injury, thereby addressing a growing need for effective tools to fill the gap between shouting and shooting. CPI gyrotrons are thus at the forefront of efforts to deliver new capabilities to U.S. forces in support of increasingly complex missions.

In January, 2007, the first public demonstration of the Air Force’s vehicle-mounted Active Denial System was held at Moody Air Force Base. This advanced non-lethal weapon system uses CPI’s VGB-8095 gyrotron to generate a 95 GHz, 100 kW beam which provides a safe but effective deterrent."


The generation of these very hi-power 'tools' or devices is based around the Gyratron, originally developed in Russia a few decades ago. Basically these things (Gyratrons) are Traditionally used in Hi-Energy Fusion Experiments and Associated Measurements and Military Grade Radar installations.

Personally, I think if you stood in the way of a directed energy 'beam' from a Gyratron, you would have your balls fried off and served up with a charred-bone side dish to the nearest Spectral Stealth-Cyborg visitor to pass by the Human relish restaurant. Advice: Steer well clear.

Having said all that, I'm now off to eBay to search for a used Gyratron for Home Defence Use only, of course, because I'm a Red-Hot 'Patriot',

Safety of Sub-Terrahertz Waves on Human Tissues.

"The terahertz region is between the radio frequency region and the optical region generally associated with lasers. Both the IEEE RF safety standard[8] and the ANSI Laser safety standard[9] have limits into the terahertz region, but both safety limits are based on extrapolation. It is expected that effects on tissues are thermal in nature and, therefore, predictable by conventional thermal models. Research is underway to collect data to populate this region of the spectrum and validate safety limits.

A study published in 2010 and conducted by Boian S. Alexandrov and colleagues at the Center for Nonlinear Studies at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico[10][11] performed mathematical models how terahertz radiation interact with double-stranded DNA, showing that, even though involved forces seem to be tiny, nonlinear resonances (although much less likely to form than less-powerful common resonances) could allow terahertz waves to "unzip double-stranded DNA, creating bubbles in the double strand that could significantly interfere with processes such as gene expression and DNA replication".[12] Experimental verification of this simulation was not done. A recent analysis of this work concludes that the DNA bubbles do not occur under reasonable physical assumptions or if the effects of temperature are taken into account.[13]
