On Thursday's show, Alex claimed that the governments of the Several States are to be mirror images of the US Constitution.  It seems to me that the only requirements imposed upon the several States by the US Constitution (prior to the ratification of any amendments) are the duty to maintain a republican form of government and, should a State choose a bicameral legislature, then both houses are to be elected proportionally to the population, and not, in the manner of the US Senate, according to geographical subdivisions without regard to population proportionality (that is, the United States House of the Senate is to be the Congress of the several States, whereas the United States House of Representatives is to be the Congress of the People, whereas the whole of the legislatures of the several States are to be the representatives of the people of the several States).

The bottom line is, the federal State is the creature of the several States, who are in turn, save for the prescribed limitations, free to be whatever they want to be.
