Melvin "Popcorn" Sutton was a legendary practitioner of the ancient Appalachian Mountain art of the hand-crafting of whiskey.

In 2008, he starred in a documentary film in which he demonstrated his craft.

This film resulted in ATF Agent Jim Cavanaugh (a prominent figure in the Waco massacre) raiding Mr. Sutton's property and charging him with moonshining and possession of a firearm by a felon.

On the basis of these charges, Mr. Sutton was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison, a severe hardship for a man who was already dying of cancer.  Mr. Sutton's request to serve his sentence by means of home confinement were ignored, and he committed suicide several days before he was to have been imprisoned.

I'd bet that Agent Cavanaugh feels very manly for having done his worst to this man:

I'm glad that the US government has men like Agent Cavanaugh who are willing to raid religious compounds and to hound sick old men to suicide to preserve society from menace.

 Huh?  Huh?  Huh?   Angry

PS: As one familiar with physics, I truly admire Mr. Sutton's still furnace, which is a horizontal tandoor (i.e., traditional Indian oven, itself actually a stone-age ramjet).  I must further comment on the fact that the still itself is a thing of true rustic beauty.

Rest in peace, "Popcorn" Sutton!
