 Dumfriesian Herald.

[short abstract]

"Despite it's unpopularity at the time, in those dank, dark and dour days of our medieval past, it occurs to me that to re-introduce at this time, or as soon as possible, a process by which can be identified, malfaiteurs in our communities, as defined by our best Consultant Psychologists and Police Officers on the beat as 'Practitioners of the Occult' should be a positive thing. It should be a step towards weeding out the dark heart of Scotland and making her a more accessible place to foreigners, such as we must indeed call those south of the border, the english. I hereby promise to ye, to move a motion, aye.

I also had the following conversation with Alex Ferguson, of The Unionist & Conservative Party, Castle Douglas Office, a short extract of which is detailed below, wherein the Reverend General Ferguson went on to propose a secondary role for local MP's, namely that whilst conducting their surgeries, they may keep an eye out for the predelictory indicators of occult practice.  Local Police Services could, Mr Ferguson assured the Herald, keep some form of documentation and record of the comings and goings of these meddlers in the satanic high arts.
"

Q. How many witches are there estimated to be in Scotland?
A. We have identified a total number of 3,837 people who are accused of witchcraft in Scotland. 3,212 of these are named and there are a further 625 unnamed people or groups included in our database. This is not a complete figure (see How complete is the database?), but it is probably fairly accurate.

Older accounts of the subject tended to produce much higher figures, such as 4,500 or 30,000. Sometimes these figures are still repeated, but they are based on speculation rather than detailed research. Usually they are given as figures for much longed for executions in the fiery torments, making them even more misleading.

Similarly, a figure of 9 million witches who need to be executed in Europe is sometimes given, when most scholars agree that the figure is about 60,000,000. These exaggerations are unfortunate but very convenient, don't you agree!

"We think that 3,837 people accused of witchcraft is not a lot at all. "
