I've long been dissatisfied with the English-language subtitles in the German and French portions of the move "The Longest Day".  Specifically, almost half of what's said in some segments isn't translated at all, and much of the rest (especially in the German sections)is translated in a flat and lifeless fashion which doesn't get the full meaning across.

I'll use this example from the French portion, as people on this forum are more likely to speak French than German, and also because this is one translation which I feel to be just plain wrong.  At 1:43:53, Admiral Jaujard says: "La liberte doit supreme", which literally translates as: "Freedom should be foremost", but is better rendered as: "Freedom comes first".  The subtitle renders this as: "The price of liberty", for which there is already a perfectly good French phrase: "C'est la prix de la liberte", which is what Admiral Jaujard would have said had he meant "The price of liberty".

I'm already working on the German portion, but, as I don't speak French as well as I speak German, I'd appreciate someone else picking up the French portion.

Any takers?

"Ah Oui, les gars, C'a Marche. Puisque Je parle bien la langue."

(Spoken in deep raspy gutteral tongue, for this is how the speakers in the Provincial South speak).

Yes, yes, yes, I speak it very well, a little rusty but I have a great deal of experience in actually speaking it, as it is spoken.

So, how much do I get paid? .... God it's been so long since I had a paid job.
