Thousands of dead fish reported at mouth of Mississippi...

State authorities say fish kill in St. Bernard Parish waters likely caused by low oxygen levels

t. Bernard Parish authorities have reported a large fish kill at the mouth of the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet, but state wildlife officials say it does not appear to be directly related to oil from the BP leak.

Randy Pausina, head fisheries biologist for the state, said Department of Wildlife and Fisheries workers are investigating the fish kill and that the initial conclusion is that it was caused by low levels of oxygen in the water.

Pausina said extreme heat can cause areas of low oxygen, especially when coupled with nutrient-rich water coming from the Mississippi River. The state opened several river diversion structures to help keep oil from penetrating the state's wetlands.

The fish were found Sunday afternoon, floating near boom that had been deployed in the area to catch oil from the BP oil leak, and washed up on the shoreline, St. Bernard Parish government said in a news release.

"By our estimates there were thousands, and I'm talking about 5,000 to 15,000 dead fish. Different species were found dead including crabs, sting rays, eel, drum, speckled trout, red fish, you name it, included in that kill," St. Bernard Parish President Craig Taffaro said.

Taffaro said there was oil in the area, but said it could not be determined at this point if it factored into the fish kill.

"We don't want to jump to any conclusions because we've had some oxygen issues by the Bayou La Loutre Dam from time to time,'' he said in the news release.

Nonetheless, Taffaro said, "It does point to the need for us to continue to monitor our waters and that's what we'll be doing."

A a thick, orange substance with tar balls and a "strong diesel smell'' was located Monday morning around Grassy Island, the news release said. Skimmers were dispatched to the area.

On Monday, vacationing beach residents awoke to a foul smell when thousands of dead fish washed ashore on a small island on the east side of Fairhaven, Massachusetts, CNN reports.

Marine fisheries explained that the fish were killed due to a lack of oxygen caused by warm waters. All of the fish were Menhaden, which are especially sensitive to such changes, and they may have been dead for days prior to washing up on the beach.

The latest occurrence of dead fish washing up on the beach happened today in New Jersey. Thousands of dead fish were found on the beach of the Delaware Bay. Gregory DeBrosse, a biologist at Rutgers and Cape Shore
Laboratory manager, told the Press of Atlantic City that there could be up to millions of dead fish on the beaches of New Jersey.

What is going on with all the dead fish and animal stories in the last few days. Here’s the latest. One of the beachings was due to a net ripping and fish then dead from shock washing ashore however that does not explain the larger fish dump.

Jersey Shore: Dead Fish Wash Ashore In Thousands For Second Time This Week On East Coast (VIDEO)

NBC Philadelphia reports that tens of thousands of dead menhaden fish washed ashore Wednesday on a New Jersey beach along Delaware Bay.

The incident is strikingly similar to an occurrence from Monday, when thousands of dead menhaden also washed ashore over 200 miles away in Fairhaven, MA (see video HERE).

N.J. Department of Environmental Protection officials say initial tests show no signs of toxic phytoplankton, like red tide, in the water, and they are still examining oxygen levels. Fisheries in Massachusetts alleged low oxygen from warm waters was the cause of the mass kill in Fairhaven, according to CNN.

Strangest of all, seagulls aren't going near what would normally appear to be a free lunch for the area's birds.

Not to undermine the seriousness of the situation, but how can dead fish be dying?  I mean, if they're already dead, aren't they kind of finished with the dying process?   ???
